Purple Heart Wood
Purple Heart wood is also known as Amaranth, Roxinho, Purpleheart & Violeta and originates from Central and South America.
The heartwood of purpleheart is a dull grayish/purplish brown when it is freshly cut. However, it becomes a deeper eggplant purple after it is exposed to the air for a few days.
As the wood ages and is exposed to more UV light, it will gradually become a dark brown with a hint of purple. This color change can be slowed down and minimized by using a finish that blocks UV light.
Other effects can be achieved with a variety of finishes or treatments - Purple heart can change colour with heat and may change colour over time.
The grain is usually straight, but can also be wavy or irregular. Has a medium texture with good natural luster.
Purple heart is a strong wood, it is hard wearing and durable. It can be difficult to work with, however we have found that it cuts well with sharp tools and can be sanded to a smooth finish.
